Trucking is crucial to West Virginia Everyday, trucks are on our nation's highways bringing all the things that Americans need. The trucking industry quietly backs up to grocery stores, hospitals and schools for deliveries without people giving it much thought.
I encourage everyone to take a closer look at trucking and transportation to understand how they get all of life's essentials.
There are more than 3.5 million truck drivers in the United States, with the industry employing one out of every 15 people in the country. In 2005, the trucking industry in West Virginia provided 44,634 jobs, or one out of 17 of all the jobs in the state.

Charleston, WV (November 2008). – As over 37 million motorists prepare to hit the road this Thanksgiving, a team of million mile accident-free drivers are helping to make our roads safer.
America’s Road Team Captains, elite professional truck drivers chosen by the American Trucking Associations – the parent organization of the West Virginia Motor Truck Association – are offering advice on how to navigate through highway traffic and arrive at your destination safely.
“Thanksgiving is about being with your family,” said Jan Vineyard, president of the WV Motor Truck Association. “But this also means that we’ll see a rise in highway traffic, with many motorists driving in unfamiliar areas. Caution and patience is especially important so we all arrive safely to our loved ones.”
“While many of these tips seem like plain common sense, taking a few minutes to review them could save hours of frustration on the road.”
Tips include:
- Prepare your vehicle for long distance travel: Check your wipers and fluids. Have your radiator and cooling system serviced. Simple maintenance can prevent many of the problems that strand motorists on the side of the road before you leave your home.
