Removal of Tolls Is Long Overdue

Now more than 50 years old, the West Virginia Turnpike -- a part of the federal interstate highway system -- is a monument to a broken promise.

The West Virginia Turnpike is back in the news, and officials are talking openly about the Turnpike's ebbing toll revenues in the wake of the nation's energy price spike. That means state government again will try to pry more cash from our fingers.

Wait a minute.

We can think of no state government entity that has a more reprehensible history than the West Virginia Turnpike, whose governing body is the West Virginia Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority.

Now more than 50 years old, the West Virginia Turnpike -- a part of the federal interstate highway system -- is a monument to a broken promise. In the early days of the highway, politicians promised the state one day would remove the tolls. West Virginia teachers even taught their students in the 1960s that the tolls were just temporary.

The WV Commissioner of Highways has RESCINDED Commissioner's Orders dated May 9, 2008, and ORDERS use of the following described bridge PROHIBITED to all trucks and other commercial vehicles exceeding the gross weight of 20,000 POUNDS:

Bridge No. 01/57/15-0.01 (10777) on CR 57/15 (SLS), located 0.01 mile south of the junction with WV 57(F), spanning Elk Creek

The Commissioner hereby ORDERS use of the following described bridge be PROHIBITED to all trucks and other commercial vehicles exceeding the gross weight of 6,000 POUNDS:

Calhoun County District 3
Bridge No. SS 07-5/6-0.01, on CR 5/6 (SLS) Non NHS/STP, located 0.01 mile east of US 33, spanning Bee Creek.

 
DHS Finalizes Employer Safe Harbor Provisions for No-Match Rule

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a supplemental rule last week on its “no-match” rule which determines when an employer is liable for knowingly employing an illegal alien. The rule provides a safe harbor against liability for employers who take certain steps upon receiving a “no-match” letter from Social Security Administration's (SSA) or Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

November 4, 2008-- The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) will hold its West Virginia State Advisory Forum from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 12 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston. NCCI holds State Advisory Forums throughout the year in a number of member states which allow for the sharing of crucial information with workers' compensation system stakeholders. These forums are designed to promote education and provide a greater understanding of both the national and state workers' compensation environments.
