The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Dec. 9 announced a proposed rule that would require all passengers and occupants riding in property-carrying commercial motor vehicles to use safety belts. 

Weekly U.S. intermodal rail traffic rose 0.8% from the same period last year, the first increase in seven weeks, the Association of American Railroads reported.

In the wake of two oversize-load crashes that led to partial bridge collapses, the National Transportation Safety Board issued a safety alert Dec. 9 to remind motor carriers of the importance of obtaining permits and carefully reviewing routes before transporting oversize loads.

The Department of Transportation's freight transportation services index rose 0.5% in October from the same month last year, just 0.2% below the all-time record, DOT said Dec. 9.
