Today, the West Virginia Trucking Association (WVTA), in partnership with the American Trucking Associations’ Share the Road Program, is offering safe driving tips for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. With an estimated 38 million people taking to the roads this weekend and with the summer roadway construction season starting, safety and awareness are the highest priorities while traveling the state’s highways. According to the AAA, this year’s Memorial Day weekend will see the second highest traffic volume in the holiday’s history.

Fayetteville-resident Kenneth Grimmett of XPO Logistics named Grand Champion

Professional truck driver Kenneth Grimmett, a driver for XPO Logistics, was named Grand Champion of the West Virginia Trucking Association’s 61st Annual Truck Driving Championship, held Saturday, June 25 in Charleston, association representatives announced. Grimmett, who has been a professional truck driver for 22 years and has driven more than 2.2 million miles, took the top honor after competing in a variety of skill and safety tests.

While he has competed in eight WV Truck Driving Championships, winning his class of competition seven times, this is the first time he has won the Grand Champion Award.

The West Virginia Trucking Association and the American Trucking Associations are teaming up with the national Share the Road highway safety program to educate high school students in the eastern panhandle how to drive safely around large trucks. High schools participating in the Share the Road program include; Hedgesville, Musselman, Martinsburg and Spring Mills.

“We are excited to share valuable information with the young drivers of West Virginia and we hope that the students will develop stronger driving habits as a result of our visit,” said Share the Road Professional Driver Clarence Jenkins (UPS Freight). “Our message today will emphasize the importance of staying alert at all times while driving and how important it is to not be a distracted driver.”

Professional truck drivers with millions of accident-free driving miles will demonstrate safety measures critical to saving lives on West Virginia highways to students. Students will have the opportunity to climb inside the cab of a tractor-trailer and see firsthand what a professional truck driver can and cannot see.
