Charles RandolphCharles Randolph, a professional truck driver with Pitt Ohio and a resident of Belle, was named national champion in the Straight Truck class at the American Trucking Associations' National Truck Driving Championship this past weekend. More than 440 professional truck drivers from across the country competed in the event, which was held in Indianapolis, Indiana.

"We are extremely proud of Charles," said Jan Vineyard, president of the West Virginia Trucking Association. "He is the first driver from West Virginia to earn a national title since 2004.  This honor signifies that he is one of the most skilled and experienced truck drivers in America and he is representative of the elite drivers we have in West Virginia."

Vineyard said Randolph has been a professional truck driver for 35 years – 27 of those with Pitt Ohio – and has driven more than 2.4 million miles. He qualified for the national competition by earning first place in the Straight Truck class during the West Virginia Truck Driving Championship, which was held in Charleston in June. He has competed in eight state level championships, winning his class of competition three times. Randolph has competed in three prior national championships.

Additionally, Nick Backes, a resident of Hurricane, who is also a driver for Pitt Ohio, placed fifth nationally in the Tanker Truck class.

Safety Should Be Number One Priority around

Today, the West Virginia Trucking Association, in partnership with the American Trucking Associations’ Share the Road Program, is urging motorists to take care on the roads this Independence Day holiday weekend.

“Whether you’re heading to the beach, a family barbecue or to watch the fireworks and celebrate our nation’s birthday, it is important to be mindful of other vehicles and to be courteous and responsible on the road,” said Jan Vineyard, president of the West Virginia Trucking Association.

It promises to be a record-breaking travel weekend – and summer - according to AAA, who has estimated that 43 million Americans will drive more than 50 miles from home. Those extra vehicles will create more congestion and potential for crashes.

The Share the Road Program is offering the following tips to remind motorists about some key elements of safe driving, especially relating to operating small passenger vehicles near large tractor-trailers.

This past weekend we held our Annul Truck Driving Championship. While we know the importance of this event to the drivers who have practiced and prepared, our hearts were heavy because of the devastation brought upon our State in the wake of the storms last week.  We heard tales of heartache because some of our own in the trucking industry lost their homes. We also heard tales of heroism from drivers who were able to assist others as the flood waters rose on Thursday and in doing so saved lives.

During the event, instead of the drawings we have done in the past, we were able to raise money to help with flood relief.  We were also able to donate food to rescue workers, who had been working around the clock in the Clendenin area.

49 Drivers are to compete in Truck Driving Championship on Saturday.

Charleston, WV (June 25, 2016) – Professional West Virginia tractor-trailer operators will test their driving skills and knowledge of the trucking industry during the West Virginia Trucking Association’s annual Truck Driving Championship, to be held this Saturday, June 25 at the Charleston Civic Center inside the North/South Halls.

The best time to experience the tractor-trailer driving competition will be between 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The Truck Driving Championships (TDC) is designed to promote safety in the trucking industry. Each driver has a chance to demonstrate his or her driving skill and knowledge of the trucking industry through a series of tests. The drivers are given a written examination, pre-trip inspection test and finally the most visible - the field test.

Drivers will compete for a chance to go to the American Trucking Associations’ National Truck Driving Championship – also known as the Super Bowl of Safety – taking place in Indianapolis, IN, August 10 – 13, 2016.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening, WV Trucking Association will host a banquet at the Civic Center to present the winners of the driving competition and annual safety awards, which include the “Driver of the Year” and the “State Police Safety Award” tributes.
